SESSION #4: History of modern yoga
We, the inhabitants of the 21st century, are heirs to a yoga that goes back thousands of years. But like all inheritance stories, it's not always straightforward, or even pretty.
In zakouski, the comic strip that describes James Mallinson's journey. You'll find some very realistic elements, and get to know this dedicated scholar.
For the main course, three interviews: we'll revisit the Yoga-Gym versus Yoga-Hindu tension, but with a touch of skepticism about yoga gym.
For dessert, more concrete action: James Mallinson's colleague takes us to see the sadhus, and we see a current practice there.
The main thing is to begin to see the path yoga has taken (mainly over the last 100 years) to get to us... in the room.
We then go back to 1893, Chicago, Vivekananda, in another session.(Presa)
Preparation
An in-depth program in which Dr. Mallison gives us an idea of the depth of the subject, and shows us how demanding it is to put forward opinions.
In passing, he reframes my other favorite, Mr White, who wrote this edifying book on Patanjali...
In English. If this is too heavy for you, move on to the following, which are much easier to digest.
Marie Kock recently wrote a book "Yoga, une histoire-monde. Du Bikram aux Beatles, du LSD à la quête de soi: le récit d'une conquête.".
His interview reviews various aspects of yoga.
Very modern, quite critical indeed.
